Orchestra
Please note that playing in an orchestra requires that all members be
at every rehearsal. It negatively affects the orchestra as a whole when
certain members are consistently late or absent. Therefore, promptness and
weekly attendance at rehearsals is mandatory. Students are expected to be
in their seats and ready to play by the scheduled rehearsal time. Please
allow enough time to get to rehearsal and be ready to rehearse. It is
important that the instructor is notified ahead of time if a student is
going to be late or absent. Excessive tardiness or missed rehearsals
will result in the possible removal of the student.
Reading Orchestra
The Reading Orchestra is for students who have been playing at least
one year and who are beginning to read. Students should be able to play a
two octave scale on their instrument. The focus is primarily on note
reading and rhythm, but also on proper orchestra behavior.
String Orchestra
The String Orchestra is for students who have been studying at least two to three years and are proficient at note reading. Students should at a minimum be able to play in the keys of G,D, and A major and D and G minor and be able to tune themselves. Students will play more advanced repertoire and focus on technique used in orchestra playing.
Keweenaw Youth Symphony Orchestra
Students in books 3 and up are invited to audition for the Symphony
Orchestra. This orchestra will include students from the school band
programs. Musicians will have the opportunity to play in a full symphony
orchestra and study symphonic repertoire. Seating placement is determined
by audition.
Adult Orchestra
This class is for adult students who have reached the middle of book
one but are not yet ready for the KSO. This is a very informal group and
the focus is on the enjoyment of music, ensemble playing and note reading.
